Claude vs Gemini: which AI is suitable for you?

Claude and Gemini are both capable general-purpose AI products, built by two of the biggest players in AI: Anthropic and Google. Each one takes a different approach to what it's good at and how it fits into your day-to-day work, which makes it harder to know which one is actually worth your time than it first appears.
In this guide, we break down how the two actually compare, what they cost, and how to figure out which one fits the way you work, so you can make the call with a clear head instead of guessing.
📌 TL;DR
- Claude is Anthropic's family of AI models, built for writing, analysis, coding, document work, and file or artifact creation.
- Gemini is Google's family of AI models, built around Google Search, native multimodal input, and direct access inside Gmail, Docs, and Drive.
- Current models include Claude Haiku 4.5, Sonnet 5, Opus 5, and Fable 5.1, alongside Google’s Gemini Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro offerings. Exact model versions and availability differ between consumer apps and developer platforms.

- At Dust, you don't have to pick one: the platform is model-agnostic, so teams can build agents with Claude, Gemini, GPT, Mistral, and other models, using whichever fits each task best.
What is Claude?
Claude is Anthropic’s family of AI models and the name of its AI assistant and apps. Its current core lineup includes Claude Sonnet 5, Claude Opus 5, Claude Haiku 4.5, and Claude Fable 5.1. These models offer different balances of capability, speed, and cost, with Fable 5.1 positioned as Anthropic’s most capable generally available model.
It supports writing, analysis, coding, document processing, web research, and the creation of files and interactive artifacts. For example, you can use Projects to organize source material and instructions, ask Claude to draft or revise a document, or use Claude Code to inspect a repository and implement changes. The available tools and workflows depend on your plan and where you use Claude.
Anthropic also offers Claude through its API and Claude Code, and through cloud platforms including Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud’s Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, formerly Vertex AI, and Microsoft Foundry on Azure. Available models and features vary by provider and region.
Claude can connect to services such as Google Workspace, Slack, and Microsoft 365 to retrieve information or perform supported actions. Access depends on the connector, account permissions, and any administrator settings, so the available workflow is not identical across every plan or organization.
Key features of Claude
Claude combines general chat with features intended for longer, more involved professional tasks.
- Multiple model classes: Claude Haiku 4.5, Sonnet 5, Opus 5, and Fable 5.1 offer different balances of speed, capability, and cost. Access depends on the product and plan.
- Claude Cowork: available on paid plans, Cowork can carry out multi-step knowledge-work tasks, including reading and writing authorized files, organizing folders, researching a topic, and creating deliverables. Connected services such as Google Drive, Gmail, and Docusign require the relevant connectors and permissions.
- Claude Code: an agentic coding assistant available in the terminal and other development surfaces. It can inspect a codebase, edit files, run commands and tests, and work with Git, subject to configured permissions.
- Claude Design: a beta product for Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise users that helps create designs, interactive prototypes, presentations, and one-pagers. It supports exports including PDF and PPTX, as well as sending work to Canva. Enterprise access requires administrator enablement.
- Writing and document work: Claude can analyze supplied documents, follow detailed editorial instructions, create files, and organize recurring work through projects.
- Web research: Claude's current plans include web search, while paid individual plans add a research mode for more involved information-gathering tasks.
- Text and image understanding: Current Claude models accept text and images. Their broader strength is reasoning over those inputs rather than native video and audio analysis.
What is Gemini?
Gemini is Google’s family of AI models and the name of its AI assistant. Google’s current API catalog includes Gemini 3.8 Flash and Gemini 3.7 Flash, alongside Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite for cost-sensitive, high-throughput workloads. Gemini 3.1 Pro remains a preview API model for advanced reasoning, coding, and agentic tasks. The model options available in Gemini Apps can differ from those in the API catalog.
Gemini combines general chat and reasoning with web-connected research and multimodal input. It is also available through supported Google products, including Gmail, Docs, Drive, and Chrome. Eligibility depends on the feature, account type, region, subscription or Workspace edition, and administrator settings.
Gemini Apps support several ways to bring information into a task: uploading documents or media, importing a code repository for analysis, and retrieving information from supported Google Workspace services. These capabilities are useful for workflows that combine research, company documents, and multimedia inputs. Access and limits vary by account, plan, and administrator settings.
That makes Gemini particularly suitable for people whose work already lives inside Google's ecosystem. Its Flash models also give Google several speed and cost options for high-volume or straightforward tasks, while Pro handles more complex reasoning and coding.
Key features of Gemini
Gemini’s features center on current information, multiple media formats, and integration with Google products.
- Several model classes: Flash-Lite targets cost-sensitive, high-throughput API workloads, Flash balances speed and capability, and Pro targets advanced reasoning and coding. The best choice depends on the task, model version, and product. Available options in Gemini Apps also depend on your account and usage limits.
- Google Search integration and Deep Research: Gemini can pull in current information from Google Search directly, and Deep Research handles tasks that require gathering and synthesizing multiple sources into one output.
- Broad file and repository support: Gemini Apps can analyze supported documents, spreadsheets, images, video, audio, code folders, and GitHub repositories, subject to file and account limits. Repository imports are read-only snapshots rather than live GitHub connections, so they do not sync later changes or write code back to the repository.
- Google Workspace access: paid plans can make Gemini available directly in Gmail, Docs, Drive, and other Google applications, reducing the need to copy information between systems.
- Native multimedia work: Gemini can analyze images, video, and audio directly, with upload duration and file limits depending on the plan.

Most common plans:
The following are US consumer web list prices, shown in US dollars. Regional pricing, taxes, billing channels, and promotional offers may differ.
- Google:AI Plus costs $4.99/month, AI Pro costs $19.99/month, and AI Ultra starts at $99.99/month for the 5× tier. An Ultra 20× tier costs $199.99/month. Higher tiers expand usage allowances and access to selected features.
- Claude:Pro costs $20/month or $200 billed annually. Anthropic displays the annual option as $17/month. Max starts at $100/month for the 5× tier, with a 20× tier at $200/month.
These are consumer subscriptions, not universal API pricing or quotas. Developer platforms and cloud-provider deployments have separate billing and usage rules.
Claude Pro and Google AI Pro sit closest together for frequent individual use, both around $20 per month. Google AI Plus offers a cheaper step above the free tier that Anthropic doesn't currently match, while both companies reserve their highest usage tier for a considerably more expensive plan.

Which one is suitable for you?
Consider Claude if you want to use Claude Code for repository work, organize recurring tasks through Projects, or use Cowork and Design for supported knowledge-work and visual deliverables. For writing, test whether its output follows your actual editorial requirements rather than assuming that every Claude model will produce the better first draft.
Consider Gemini if eligible integrations with Gmail, Docs, and Drive are important to your workflow, or if you need supported audio and video analysis. Google AI Plus also offers a lower-priced paid entry point than Claude Pro in the US. Both products support document work and web research, so the better fit depends on your specific needs.
Start with the same real task in both products and record the model, plan, enabled tools, and inputs. Compare factual accuracy, instruction following, citation quality, and the amount of editing required. Free-plan results reflect those particular product tiers and may not represent the models or features available on paid plans.
